Your hands do almost every job on site. That's why they get hurt more than most other parts of the body. Cuts, scrapes, burns and chemical splashes happen every day. The good news? The right safety gloves can stop most of these injuries.
The hard part is choosing. There are hundreds of hand gloves out there, from light cotton gloves to heavy leather gloves. A pair of work gloves that's great for sharp metal might fall apart in minutes around oil.
This guide keeps it simple. Follow these five steps and you'll know what to look for. Want more detail? See our guides on cut resistant gloves, nitrile, PVC and latex gloves and when to replace work gloves.
Step 1: Know the Hazard Before You Choose Safety Hand Gloves
Start with the job, not the glove. Ask yourself: what will my hands touch today? Most risks fit into four groups:
- Sharp things: metal edges, glass, nails, rough materials
- Chemicals: oil, fuel, solvents, acids, cleaning liquids
- Heat or cold: hot surfaces, welding sparks, freezer rooms
- Germs and dirt: food, medical waste, lab samples
Many jobs have more than one risk. A mechanic, for example, needs safety hand gloves that give grip, scrape protection and oil protection all at once.
Step 2: Learn the Main Types of Industrial Gloves
Here's a quick look at the most common industrial gloves and what each one is good at.
|
Glove type |
Good for |
Not so good for |
|---|---|---|
|
Cotton and dotted gloves |
Light handling, packing, better grip on boxes |
Sharp, wet or oily work |
|
Coated gloves (PU, nitrile, PVC) |
Assembly, oily or wet work, general handling |
Depends on the coating |
|
Cut resistant gloves |
Sharp metal, glass, blades |
Only as strong as their cut level |
|
Leather gloves |
Rough handling, rigging, welding |
Wet work, as leather soaks up liquid |
|
Heat resistant gloves |
Hot surfaces and parts |
Fine, detailed tasks |
|
Chemical resistant gloves |
Oil, fuel, acids, cleaning liquids |
Always check the chemical chart |
|
Disposable gloves |
Quick tasks, food, hygiene |
Heavy work; they tear easily |
|
Freezer gloves |
Cold rooms and frozen goods |
Jobs that need fine finger control |
Dotted gloves are cotton gloves with small PVC dots on the palm. They give extra grip for warehouse and packing work at a low cost. Coated gloves go a step further, with a full layer of PU, nitrile or PVC on the palm.
You can see examples of each type in our coated, cut resistant, chemical resistant, heat resistant, leather, cotton knit, disposable and freezer glove ranges.
Step 3: How to Read the Rating on EN388 Gloves
Most protective gloves carry a small shield symbol with "EN 388" and a code like 4543D. These are known as en388 gloves. The code looks confusing, but it's easy once you know the order:
- Abrasion: how well it handles rubbing and scraping (0 to 4)
- Blade cut: an older cut test (0 to 5, or X if not tested)
- Tear: how hard it is to rip (0 to 4)
- Puncture: how well it stops sharp points (0 to 4)
- Cut level: the newer, more accurate cut test (A to F)
So a 4543D glove is very tough against scraping, good against tears and punctures, and has cut level D. That's a solid choice for handling sharp metal.
A simple rule: cut level A to B for light handling, C to D for sheet metal, and E to F for glass and blades. Our guide to cut resistant gloves levels explains each one.
Step 4: Choosing Chemical Resistant Gloves
If your team handles liquids, you need chemical resistant gloves. Look for EN ISO 374-1 on the glove. It comes with letters such as AKLMPST. Each letter stands for a chemical the glove was tested against. Match those letters with the safety data sheet for the chemical you use.
If you also see EN ISO 374-5, the glove protects against germs too. That's useful for labs and waste handling.
As a quick rule, nitrile is best for oil and solvents, while PVC suits acids and water-based chemicals. Read our full nitrile vs PVC gloves guide to learn more.
Step 5: Get the Right Fit and Comfort
This step is easy to skip, but it matters a lot. Loose gloves slip and can get caught in machines. Tight gloves tire your hands, and workers end up taking them off.
Comfort matters even more for safety gloves uae workers use outdoors, where heat is a daily challenge. Gloves with a knitted back and wrist let air in, so people keep them on all day. Order a range of sizes so everyone gets a good fit.
Which Hand Protection Gloves for Which Job?
Here's a quick guide to hand protection gloves by job:
- Packing and warehouse work: cotton or dotted gloves
- Car workshops and assembly: PU or nitrile coated gloves, cut level C to D
- Oil and gas: reusable nitrile or thick PVC gloves
- Metal work: cut resistant gloves with a nitrile or PU palm
- Rigging and heavy lifting: leather rigger gloves
- Food handling: food-safe disposable gloves
- Welding: leather welding gloves
- Hot parts: heat resistant gloves
- Cold storage: insulated freezer gloves
What are the main types of safety gloves?
The main types are cotton, dotted, coated, cut resistant, leather, heat resistant, chemical resistant, disposable and freezer gloves. Each one protects against different hazards.
How do I choose the right work gloves?
First list the hazards in the job: sharp edges, chemicals, heat, cold or germs. Then choose gloves made for that hazard and check their EN388 or EN ISO 374 rating.
What does EN388 mean on gloves?
EN388 is the European standard for gloves that protect against mechanical risks. It rates abrasion, cut, tear and puncture resistance.
What are dotted gloves used for?
Dotted gloves are used for light handling, packing and warehouse work. The dots give better grip on boxes and smooth items.
